1. Local
Every year the Shropshire Beekeepers Association takes part in activities and displays run by such organisations as The National Trust, Acton Scott Farm Museum and the West Mids Show. We will sometimes have products for sale. We will always be happy to talk about bees and beekeeping! Notification of particular appearances will be posted here as and when they are arranged.
We are also able to offer talks to schools in support of the National Curriculum. Teachers interested in discussing this should email the Education Officer.
On June 13th we are holding a 'Disease Recognition Day' when the the Western Region Bee Inspectorate Team will be guiding us through what to look for when we inspect our bees - and what to do about it if we find anything of concern. They will be using all their resources to familiarise us with less common diseases such as the Foul Broods, as well as keeping us up to date on the Nosemas, varroa and more exotic infestations. Admission to this event will be by advance ticket purchase. Priority for places will be offered to SBKA members though other beekeepers will have the chance to apply. Watch this space.
The biggest event of our year is the Shrewsbury Flower Show, which takes place in the Quarry Park in Shrewsbury every August. Association members organise a major display of bee products, with competitive classes for honey, mead, beeswax items and so on. Bees can be seen in the Observation Hive and there is often a chance to watch demonstrations by beekeepers of their skills. The best honey from all over the County is also available to taste and/or buy. The 2008 show will be on the 15th & 16th August. Volunteers are needed to help with preparing and manning the beekeeping section - contact Ray Green for further information.
